What causes impotence?

Erections start in the mind. When sights, sounds, touches, or thoughts make a man sexually aroused, his brain tells the arteries in his penis to open the floodgates -- or, to paraphrase Captain Jean-Luc Picard, "Engorge!" The arteries become relaxed, the blood flow to his penis increases to seven times the normal volume, and an erection is born. Extra blood keeps rushing in as long as the man stays aroused or until he ejaculates. Of course, the whole process can break down. If the brain doesn't send the right signals, or if the arteries can't respond to them, a man will be unable to have an erection.

Many things can thwart an erection at one or more of the steps along the way. If you suffer from impotence, one of the following factors is probably to blame:

Cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and other problems with the heart and blood vessels can cause impotence by hampering blood flow to the penis. The Massachusetts Male Aging study found that 15 percent of men with hypertension were completely impotent, compared with 9.6 percent of the entire study group.
Medications. The National Institutes of Health reports that many common drugs can lead to impotence, including antihistamines, antidepressants, tranquilizers, appetite suppressants, the ulcer drug cimetidine, and blood pressure medications such as beta blockers and diuretics. (If you develop impotence while taking antidepressants or blood pressure medications, however, remember that the disease itself could also be to blame.)
Diabetes. If it causes extensive damage to nerves and blood vessels, diabetes can block pleasurable sensations as well as blood flow. The NIH estimates that 35 to 50 percent of all men with diabetes suffer from impotence.
Psychological factors. According to the NIH, psychological distress lies at the root of 10 to 20 percent of all cases of impotence. If you suffer from impotence but have erections in the morning or while you sleep, there's a good chance your problem is largely psychological. Factors that can lead to impotence include stress, fear, performance anxiety, guilt, depression, and low self-esteem. Feelings of resentment or hostility -- harbored by either the person experiencing impotence or his partner -- can also derail intimacy.
Prostate surgery. Not long ago, many men had to sacrifice their sex lives after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer. Today, thanks to new surgical techniques that spare the nerves and vessels feeding the penis, impotence is far from inevitable. Surgeons at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis recently conducted a study of cancer patients who were able to achieve erections normally before surgery. Sixty-eight percent of the men studied were still able to have erections after the prostate gland was removed. However, only 48 percent of those 70 and older regained their potency.
Smoking. Cigarettes can damage your arteries, with consequences that are enough to make even the Marlboro Man find a different habit. According to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control, smokers between the ages of 31 and 49 are 80 percent more likely than nonsmokers of the same age to suffer from impotence.
Bicycling. Although there is controversy on this subject, a few experts say regular cycling is a major cause of impotence. A recent Boston University survey looked at more than 1,000 male cycling and running club members, with an average age of 43, and found that 4 percent of cyclists had moderate to complete impotence, compared with 1 percent of runners. There's no doubt that pressing one's crotch into a hard bicycle seat puts tremendous pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that feed the penis. If you ride a bike, be sure to lean back regularly to shift your weight from the groin area to the buttocks. You should also consider investing in a seat that's specially designed to put less pressure on the groin. If you often feel numbness in your penis after bike riding, or if numbness is less frequent but lingers, schedule an appointment with your doctor or a urologist.
Other factors. Alcoholism, pelvic injuries, multiple sclerosis, and below-normal levels of testosterone are all capable of causing impotence.

How Erectile Dysfunction Is Diagnosed?

The degree of erectile dysfunction can vary from person to person, it can be a momentary to quite a short period or total inability to hold their erection and perform sexual intercourse.
Diagnosis of erectile dysfunction is carried out by:

  • Physical Examination: Physical examination in any condition becomes doctor’s first choice. Doctor may try to determine possible causes of erectile dysfunction during physical examination such as sensitivity of penis towards sexual invitations or determination of possible injury causing erectile dysfunction etc.
  • Patient’s Medical & Behavioral History: Patient’s medical, sexual and behavioral history may serve as a clue towards diagnosing erectile dysfunction and it degree. Some people lose their ability to attain erection to a chronic and severe disease history, some loses it to history of drug abuse and some lose it to their sexual history.
  • Psycho Analysis: Patient’s psychological examination can reveal causes of erectile dysfunction and also can help in finding out all possible solutions.

  • Along with the above mentioned diagnosis tests, there are many other laboratory based tests available that can help in finding out degree and nature of erectile dysfunction.

Erectile Dysfunction - Symptoms, Causes

What is impotence?

Impotence occurs when a man has difficulty with getting an erection or keeping one for long enough to allow satisfactory sexual activity.

It's one of the most common sexual problems. Affects around 2.3 million men only in the UK and many more all over the world. 50% of men over the age of 35 will experience it in their lives. It becomes more common and severe as men get older and older. However, only about 9 % of affected men seek help or they think that is not a problem, it`s only temporary condition.

Causes

There are many reasons why man may have impotence. In around 3/4 of cases there are physical problems affecting the blood supply. There is a complex relationship between the physical and psychological aspects of sexual function. For example, you may have physical health problems that cause psychological distress and this may have an additional effect on erection problems and that cause Impotence.

Physical health

A number of different conditions may cause impotence, including:

  • diabetes
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson's disease
  • if you have had surgery in your pelvic area
  • hormone disorder

Psychological

Psychological problems can influence your ability to get and keep erections. These include:

  • feeling anxious, guilty or depressed
  • stress at work оr at home
  • conflicts with your partner
  • unresolved issues about your sexual orientation

Lifestyle

If you drink too much alcohol (even beer), this can affect the ability to get and keep an erection . In the longer term, it interferes with the production of the male hormone testosterone, which can reduce your sexual drive and desire (libido).

Smoking damages your blood vessels and so increases your risk of erection problems. Similarly, being physically inactive, which contributes to poor cardiovascular fitness, may raise the chances of you having impotence. Impotence may be an early warning sign that you are at risk of coronary heart disease (the arteries that go to your heart are narrowed). You can see our Non-smoking products.

Many men need greater tactile stimulation as they get older. You may want to consider a change in sexual foreplay and technique to ensure a sustained erection.

Medicines

The drugs such us those for blood pressure or antidepressants have the side-effects ho can lead to impotence. Some pills can also affect your libido, cause problems with ejaculation and orgasm. These can also have an effect on your erections.

Diagnosis

You may decide to see your GP if you are anxious about how reliably you can have an erection. This is often the initial problem in younger men. However, occasional episodes of impotence are common and don't mean that you will have persistent problems in the future.

You may feel embarrassed when you first go to discuss the issue with your GP or practice nurse. However, talking about impotence is routine for GPs and nurses. Don`t be ASHAMED. It`s normal for human beings to have problem with sexuality in old ages.

Your GP will ask about your general health and your erections. This will include whether or not you wake up with an erection in the morning and the strength of erections compared with those in the past. Your GP will ask you if you are taking any medication, and whether there have been any changes in your life recently that might have influenced your sexual health.

Your GP will take your blood pressure and check the pulses in your legs. This helps to indicate how healthy your circulation is. The doctor will examine your penis, scrotum and testicle. Your GP may request blood tests for conditions such as anaemia, diabetes, high cholesterol or hormone imbalances. He or she may also examine the prostate gland.

Your GP may talk with you and your partner together about any physical or psychological factors that could be contributing to the problem. For example, around the menopause, women may experience pain or discomfort during intercourse - if the man has a faltering erection, this may lead to further distress for you both.

More specialised tests to assess blood flow and the way your nerves are working can be done in specialist hospital clinics. Your GP will refer you if this is necessary.

List of components witch are included in our pills.

Niacin
is critical to energy production and proper circulation for long-lasting erections Vitamin B3 or Niacin causes a release of histamine all over the body, one effect of which is to dilate blood vessels so more blood can flow through them. A relatively large release of histamine occurs naturally during sexual excitation causing a 'sex flush'. The flush caused by niacin is basically the same as the natural 'sex flush', but in many cases more intense. The niacin-induced histamine release also causes the secretion of mucus in the mouth and sexual organs. Niacin also has the ability to increase sensation all over the body. Thus it plays an integral role in heightening the total physical experience during intercourse.

Niacin or Vitamin B-3 assists in the breakdown and utilization of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. Niacin also reduces serum lipids, is involved in the synthesis of sex hormones, and increases blood circulation.

Vitamin B-6 is necessary for the metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. It facilitates the conversion of amino acids from one to another and is necessary for the normal synthesis of hemoglobin and the normal function and growth of red blood cells. It is also needed for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters serotonin, gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) and dopamine and for the conversion of essential fatty acids into prostaglandins. Vitamin B-6 helps prevent the onset of arteriosclerosis without the side effects of other stimulants like caffeine. By helping to clear the blood vessels of plaque it allows for a greater volume of blood to flow to the penis during arousal. This results in an erection that can then be firmer, harder and longer lasting.

Vitamin B-6 or Pyridoxine is one of the most versatile enzyme cofactors. It is the master vitamin in the processing of amino acids, which are the building blocks of all proteins and some hormones. It works synergistically in this formulation to facilitate rapid absorption in the blood stream. Vitamin B-6 is also important for nerve impulse transmission, and is critical in the formation of neurotransmitters that effect mental processes and enhance mood.

L-Arginine is an amino acid that releases human growth hormone, enhances fat metabolism, and is necessary for normal sperm count. It helps to create nitric oxide in the human body. Nitric oxide is the most essential substance influencing sexual functioning in both men and women. L-Arginine promotes circulation resulting in improved blood flow to the genital area. It also improves sperm count, seminal volume, and motility.

L-Arginine is an essential amino acid and plays a multiplicity of roles in the body. Aside from bolstering the immune system, increasing human growth hormones, and helping remove excess ammonia from the body, it is also needed to increase protein synthesis. This is essential for cell replication and increased sperm counts. Dilation of blood vessels critical for firm erections is dependent on nitric oxide. L-arginine aids in nitric oxide formation. Animal and human studies indicate that L-aginine improves sexual function.

This nutrient is highly important for peak sexual performance. In fact, it is probably the most effective natural supplement for increasing male libido.

Current studies support the use of argentine supplements to ensure that nitric oxide secretion is sufficient to keep blood flowing to the penis.

L-Phenylalanine
(LPA) is a free-form amino acid that serves as a building block for various proteins that are produced in the body. It is converted to phenylethylamine, which functions as an anti-depressant and creates a positive, elevated mood. It improves memory and concentration. LPA also creates better fat mobilization and functions as an appetite suppressor.

L-phenylalanine has putative antidepressant activity.

L-phenylalanine is an essential amino acid which can be converted to L-tyrosine by a complex biochemical process which takes place in the liver. L-tyrosine can be converted by neurons in the brain to dopamine and nor epinephrine (noradrenalin), hormones which are depleted by stress, overwork and certain drugs. By replenishing nor-epinephrine in the brain, mental energy levels are enhanced and a feeling of contentment often occurs. Because of the liver conversion necessary for L-phenylalanine to have these effects, L-tyrosine is often faster acting. In addition, the conversion step from L-tyrosine to nor epinephrine may be enhanced if the cofactors (vitamins B6 and C)

L-phenylalanine may be taken in supplement form as a mild anti-depressant, to generally lift the mood and increase mental alertness. L-phenylalanine is able to have this effect by stimulating the production of certain excitatory neurotransmitters

L-Phenylalanine is a precursor to tyrosine, which converts to the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, and tyramine. L-phenylalanine has a powerful effect on the nervous system and consequently effects mood and emotional well- being.

Epimedium
Commonly known as Horny goat weed orYin Yang Huo, was first described in ancient classical Chinese medicinal texts. Today, horny goat weed holds an important place in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is gaining popularity around the world. Used by practitioners for over 2,000 years, Epimedium is a leafy plant and the leaves contain a variety of flavonoids, polysaccharides, sterols and an alkaloid called magnaflorine. The plant has long been employed to restore sexual fire, boost erectile function, allay fatigue and alleviate depression.

Epimedium (Horny Goat Weed) has been used for centuries in China, and is considered one of its most valued herbal tonics. It is used especially for supporting healthy sexual activity- thus its name Horny Goat Weed. Medical studies report that Epimedium Sagittatum helps boost libido, and improve erectile dysfunction. Scientifically, it works by freeing up testosterone, which increases our sex drive and endurance. It also tonifies the kidneys and reduces symptoms of impotence, frequent urination and lower back pain.

How it works?
Studies have shown that Epimedium increases sexual activity in animals and humans, improves sperm production and has a moderate androgen-like influence on the testes, prostate gland, and anal muscles, thereby influencing sexual desire and activity.

Research has also shown that Epimedium can inhibit an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE). AChE rapidly stops neurotransmission at cholinergic synapses like those found in the brain and at neuromuscular junctions, which are needed for speedy responses in the neuromuscular system. By inhibiting AChE, Epimedium supports higher levels of the key cholinergic neurotransmitters associated with sexual arousal.

Epimedium might have AMO (mono-amine-oxidase-ihibitor) activity. In trials they showed that levels of noradrenaline, adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine levels were all elevated in animals given Epimedium. High dopamine levels encourage the release of leutenizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland. LH in turn stimulates the testes to produce more testosterone; this may help to explain the pro- sexual effects. Epimedium also works by stimulating the sensory nerves throughout the body, particularly in the genital region. Additionally, Epimedium has powerful immune stimulating properties.

MACA (Lepidium meyenii)
Maca comes from a root of the radish family that grows high in the Peruvian Andes Mountains of South America. For hundreds of years native Peruvians have used Maca for its ability to increase energy and stamina and, more popularly, for its effectiveness as an aphrodisiac.

Maca is an all-natural herbal wonder from Peru with a legendary history that goes back over 3000 years. It was an integral part of the diet and commerce of the Incas who found it so powerful that they restricted its use to their Royal court. It was used to increase sexual ability and pleasure, for energy and endurance, mental clarity, and more. Maca contains over 50 naturally occurring phyto-chemicals. These include important hormonal precursors and sterols proven to assist the human body in a number of recognizable ways. It is also an adaptogen working to create homeostasis in the body, regulating levels of hormones and enzymes. The benefits for men are considerable. Maca supports enhanced libido, improved potency and fertility, increased DHEA and testosterone levels, improved athletic performance, and help overcome depression, and alleviate stress.

In Peruvian herbal medicine today, Maca, (also called Peruvian Ginseng) is reported to be used as an immunostimulant and a cure for other reproductive and sexual disorders. Maca's history as a powerful strength and stamina enhancer and libido-fertility herb stretches back well over five hundred years. Maca is a powerful adaptogen that can help balance our body's systems. Maca can stabilize blood pressure, boost immunity, and harmonize the body's overall vitality.

Make no doubt- maca is a wonderful source of natural vital nutrients. The synergy of so many amino acids, vitamins, and minerals in their natural states may increase the assimilation, uptake, and utilization of them in the body.

The nutritional value of dried maca root is high. It contains 60-75% carbohydrates, 10-14% protein, 8.5% fiber, and 2.2% lipids. It also has about 250 mg of calcium, 2 g of potassium, and 15 mg of iron in 100 g of dried root-and important amounts of fatty acids. In addition to its rich supply of essential nutrients, maca contains alkaloids, tannins, and saponins.

Doctor's Comments on Maca
Gary F. Gordon, M.D., former President of the American College for Advance Medicine, now founder and president of the International College of Advanced Longetivity Medicine, located in Chicago, Illinois, know first hand the value of Maca. "We all hear rumors about various products like Maca," he says. "But using this Peruvian root myself, I personally experienced a significant improvement in erectile tissue response.

Dr. Gordon explains that Maca works by normalizing our steroid hormones like testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen. Therefore it has the facility to forestall the hormonal changes of aging. It acts on men to restore them to a healthy functional status in which they experience a more active libido. While at the same time relaxes the penile muscles thereby allowing blood flow into the penile muscle tissue causing a hard erection
